08 /Compare · Studio vs. freelancer
Both have a place. We have lost engagements to freelancers and won some back six months later. Here is the honest comparison — including when the freelancer is genuinely the right call.
Freelancers ship code. KAIV ships systems. The trade-off is real — and worth understanding before you commit either way.
01 /Dimension by dimension
| Dimension | A solo freelance designer or developer | KAIV Studio |
|---|---|---|
| Starting price | $2,000 – $8,000 | From $12,000 |
| Typical timeline | 2 – 6 weeks | 4 – 16 weeks |
| Strategy + positioning | Usually outside scope | Always included |
| Brand system | Logo only, typically | Full system: type, color, motion, voice |
| Design system / component library | Rarely | Engineered to live in code, not just Figma |
| SEO + performance engineering | Surface-level | Built in from week one |
| Coverage if your designer is sick | None — you wait | Continuous — the team carries on |
| Maintenance & iteration | Best-effort, when available | Optional retainer with SLAs |
| Communication overhead | Low (one person) | Low (one lead per engagement) |
| Risk of disappearance mid-project | Genuine industry problem | Studio entity — contract & insurance backed |
When we are the right call
When we are not
03 /Honest answers
Day-one, yes. Within six months, frequently no. The rebuild that comes after the freelance MVP — bigger team, real code review, a brand system that did not exist — usually costs more than commissioning it properly the first time. The freelancer is the right call when budget is firm and the scope is genuinely small (e.g., a single landing page).
You may not need to. Many of our clients started with a freelancer they loved, hit a scale ceiling, and brought us in to engineer the next chapter. The freelancer often stays involved. We rarely replace good freelancers; we extend what they have built.
If your project requires (a) brand + product + marketing site working in one system, (b) longevity past the initial launch, or (c) coverage if any one person disappears — a studio is the right structure. If you need a single component built in two weeks, a strong freelancer is faster and more affordable.
